Health classes explained

Break down the rate classifications: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—what each tier is, and the factors that place you in each.

When setting term premiums, carriers use rate classes to organize risk. Wording shifts between carriers, yet the steps line up: Preferred Plus (or Super Preferred / Preferred Best), then Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, with table numbers for elevated risk above that. Tobacco applicants occupy a separate set of tiers at steeper costs.

What underwriters look at

BMI, blood pressure, lipid panel, any heart or cancer before 60 in the family, driving history, medications you take, job type, pastimes, and nicotine status. Top classes demand near-perfect marks everywhere; Preferred relaxes a bit; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed conditions like blood pressure under control.

How to use the quote tool

The health prompt wants an honest self-rating: pick Excellent for Preferred Plus, Very good for Preferred, Good for Standard Plus, or Average for Standard. Your quotes line up with that classification; the carrier sets the actual tier during review. In doubt? Quote both your class and the next one up, compare them, and let the app decide. Overestimating your health class won't reduce your final payment; it just skews the forecast.

When a specific condition is in your history, Susman Insurance Agency helps you find carriers with more lenient rules. Often, that matters more than the advertised price.
